Fluid Island of Pearls is an exhibition by Danish Artist Isabel Berglund displayed in ILLUM. The installation has been created specifically for ILLUM’s grand atrium. The title refers to the department store as a floating island of pearls. This monumental, hand-knitted textile installation cascades from the ceiling, extending gracefully across multiple floors. The textured mass appears to drip downward toward viewers, forming voluminous shapes molded by the fabric’s own weight. It creates the illusion of a floating fabric, with large strings of pearls emerging organically from the textile, as though they have grown from the material and transformed into rounded, polished forms. Fluid shapes dissolve into new forms and surfaces, embodying a continuous transformation from one state to another.
About the Artist
The work of Danish artist Isabel Berglund unfolds as sculptural objects, offering an intimate exploration of material, color, and space. Berglund’s preferred media is hand-knitted yarn which she varies and processes with a focus on the material’s aesthetic and tactile qualities. The textile is empathized through Berglund’s use of color and creation of space.
Isabel Berglund lives and works in Copenhagen. In addition to Denmark, her works have been exhibited in Europe, Asia, and the United States, in museums, galleries, and other venues. Berglund is represented by Galleri SPECTA Copenhagen.
