The difference between a good party look and an outstanding one comes down to your choice of hair and makeup – an area Nina Larsen is an undisputed expert in. As a professional makeup artist, she always knows what works and which looks to go for.
Larsen is behind the amazing hair and makeup looks presented on screen during TV programs such as X Factor and Vild med Dans. She is truly passionate about makeup and beauty, and has been ever since her pre-teen years, when she became fascinated with female ideals and the beauty industry.
Here, she teaches us a lesson in how to keep our makeup in place all night as well as the hair and makeup trends to try this season.
… is added focus on my skincare. My daily routine always includes cleanser, serum, moisturizer, and eye cream. When I’m going out I prep the night before by adding an exfoliating peeling mask to my routine, and on the day I always use a moisturizing mask. This gives me the perfect glowing and dewy skin so the makeup will look more smooth.
… is smoky eyes. As a professional makeup artist I am constantly inspired by new makeup trends, but I always return to the smoky eye look. Smoky eyes add focus to the eye area which suits almost everyone. The technique depends on which style is suitable for you as well as the look you are going for.
… that you feel comfortable and recognize yourself. Makeup is very individualistic and can be used as a way to express your personality. You should therefore consider which type of makeup will give you your desired look and outcome. It is helpful to familiarize yourself with basic makeup products such as primer, foundation, concealer, powder, blush, mascara etc. As a makeup novice you don’t have to use them all. Make it easy and manageable for yourself, then you can always expand to more advanced makeup looks if you feel inspired to.
… you have to take notice of your skin type and its specific needs. After your skincare routine, you apply a primer before starting with your makeup. There is an abundance of primers depending on what your skin needs. A primer makes the makeup sit better on your skin so it stays perfectly all night. If your skin has trouble keeping the makeup on, another advice can be to spray setting spray on a sponge and carefully apply to the areas needed. Setting spray is used to fixate makeup and make it last longer. Finish by gently spraying setting spray over your face.
As a makeup artist I often meet people that are scared of makeup because they associate it with putting on an unrecognizable mask the skin can’t breathe through. It is better to think of makeup as a tool you use to emphasize your personality and style. With very few products you can create a beautiful and simple makeup look to highlight your natural features.
… sophisticated drama. The makeup is colorful with highly-pigmented nuances of blue and green for the eyes. More striking looks with graphical black kohl and eyeliner are also popular. The lips are back in focus as well. It’s mostly the colors red, plum, and berries that are prevailing in both mat and glossy versions. Lipstick can either be the primary element in your look or it can be combined with dramatic eye makeup. Last but not least, the no-makeup-makeup trend continues. Natural makeup has to look simple and glowing while adding a healthy look to your face.
… natural and give the feeling of being air-dried. Naturally styled hair is often a stunning contrast to a dramatic makeup look. The middle parting has been a longtime favorite, but this season, we are seeing the arrival of the deep and sharp side parting. Striking bangs in graphically or chobby versions are also a growing trend. Bangs can be combined regardless of length. For many seasons there has been a focus on long hair – always a classic – but this season, haircuts are back with the undone bob and mullet paired with colors such as platinum, cobber nuances, pastels, and natural colors.
