Julie and Marie Skall have built a cult fashion brand from their values. Since launching their womenswear label, Skall Studio, in 2014, the sisters have garnered praise for their romantic designs, which focus on loose smock dresses and peasant blouses. Sustainability sits at the heart of their brand: animal products are eschewed, natural materials are used, and they collaborate only with carefully vetted suppliers.
This thoughtful approach extends to other aspects of their life – including hosting. The Skalls grew up in northern Denmark and credit their coastal childhood with an ongoing affinity to the natural world. In culinary terms, this translates to an interest in fresh, seasonal produce bought from local farmers. As vegans, they take pleasure in curating menus that showcase these ingredients to loved ones who are less familiar with the food consumed in a plant-based lifestyle. “The menu is always set based on our values and tastes, which means lots of cooked vegetables, beans and salads,” says Julie. “Most people are amazed at how good a vegetable stew can taste.”
Despite this, they are careful to accommodate the carnivores, too. Their boyfriends are placed on meat duty, preparing one small dish for those who crave it. “It is all about doing your best as a host,” she adds. “You can serve the most simple, delicious food and still have a great evening as long as your guests feel good.”
This year, the sisters will gather with their growing broods in the countryside for long walks in the woods and afternoons spent baking traditional Danish delicacies. For the Skalls, the season’s greatest gift is simply the opportunity to watch their families “come together at the table for food and conversation.”
